Last Weekend I brought the new Wartburg home, so we could do some work on it. Taking it home was a bit of a hassle, since it was only running on two cylinders, so it wouldn’t go faster then 110 km/h, and finally I ran out of gas 30 km before getting home, as the fuel gauge didn’t work, and my estimate of fuel consumption was spoiled by the fact that it wasn’t running properly.
But once home, we quickly fixed the problem, by replacing the ignition coils, and the we proceeded to prepare the car for the rally by adding stickers, rally lights, a roof rack, checking up the brakes, and raising the rear suspension by installing the springs from the estate we were planning to use first.
After some initial test runs, we must say she runs really nice, and it’s great fun to drive the car. The wobbly suspension is great for speeding across unpaved roads, and the little, quick-reving, two-stroke engine really puts the car up to speed - combined with the suspension this results in a lot of wheelspins in first and second gear.
